KohTao's status expanded and speedily amplified as it broadly became known throughout the world through adventurous visitors and international travellers.
Immediately following the horrible events of the December 2004 Tsunami, the type of tourist visiting Ko Tao have changed, previously it had been a Mecca for backpackers, year out students along their way North to Bangkok and beyond.
The name Ko Tao means Turtle Island; some say that the name is from the islands shape which is meant to look like an inverted down turtle whilst other people say its from the days when the sea around Ko Tao were rich with turtles and the island was their breeding area.
They were the twin brothers Khun Oh and Khun Ueam who got to KoTao by boat from the neighboring island of Kohphangan, Koh Tao was still under Royal Patronage in those days but it didn't stop those fortune seekers from staking their claim. From the days of being a prison, through to its current development, Turtle islandhas retained it's magic, though it now caters for everybodys tastes and costs. This small islandwas still under Royal Patronage in the early days, but it did not avert those fortune seekers from making their claim. The very first generation of todays community started to settle when they brought their families to Koh Taoand began to farm and reap the rich soil and natural resources on offer. Even though it still being under Royal Patronage, pieces of land were claimed, and vacated for coconut plantations. You can still see loads of proof of the very large coconut plantations all over the island. Every now and again progress can be a wonderful thing, it's a good thing KoTao has kept its chilled atmosphere, ]it is,it's] still nigh on impossible to find a crowded beach. On June the 18th 1899, the then king of Thailand King Chulalongkorn (Rama V 1868-1910) visited Koh Taoand left his monogram as evidence on a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay near Sairee Beach. |
